Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Classes for

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, commonly referred to as BJJ, is a martial art that has been proven to be one of themost effective combat systems in a one on one situation, in the world. Brazilian jiu-jitsu was formed from Kodokan Judo ground fighting fundamentals that were taught to Carlos Gracie by Mitsuyo Maeda in the early 1900’s. Carlos Gracie and the Gracie Family are known as the Founders and Creators of Modern Jiu Jitsu (Gracie Jiu Jitsu/Brazilian Jiu Jitsu). Brazilian jiu-jitsu eventually came to be its own art through the experimentations, practices, and adaptation from the Judo knowledge of Carlos and Hélio Gracie, who then passed their knowledge on to their extended family. BJJ promotes the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant by taking the fight to the ground using proper technique and leverage and then applying joint-locks and chokeholds to defeat the opponent. BJJ training is predominantly used for sport grappling tournaments (gi and no-gi) and mixed martial arts (MMA) competition or self-defence. Sparring (or “rolling” as it is commonly referred to) and live drilling plays a major role in training as it is a well-recognised benefit of grappling arts that you can effectively spar and train at very near a hundred percent capability without severely damaging yourself and your opponent. The competition BJJ scene is a very active and vibrant affair and is generally open to competitors of all levels. With the acceptance of your instructor you can get a match at pretty much all ages, weights and belt levels and it is a great way for a grappler to fulfil a need for physical competition. Our Club is proud to be associated to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt and multiple champion Chico Mendes of the legendary Checkmat team. The instructor and team members attend weekly classes with Chico to ensure that the best instruction in BJJ is passed on to their students. The members of the club also have the option to attend seminars with Chico and other Checkmat professors on a regular basis. Please don’t be fooled by clubs that offer instruction in Jiu Jitsu and do not have the proper qualifications to pass on the knowledge. At this current moment “We are the only club” in the North Somerset area that is qualified to instruct in BJJ at Black belt level.

Ive never suffered from nerves, not sure why that is but when our club and team mates compete I feel sick to my stomach all day and cant eat (which if you know me is highly unusual 🤣).

Anyway I dont know why I worry because all of them perfomed brilliantly yesterday and couldnt be more pleased with each and every one of them. Solid performances and did yourselves and the team proud.

Shout out to the rest of the Checkmat Family who helped secure 3rd place in the teams event even though we had smaller numbers taking part.

Great job everyone, so good to be part of the Checkmat team and stand alongside you all. 🥋🙌🏼

Darren Yeoman great to catch up mate, great camaraderie between teams, your team are a credit to you 👍

Well what can I say about yesterdays Somerset Open, blinking amazing.
Every single one of our team that competed went out there and gave it everything and certainly didnt give any of their opponents an easy ride.
Win or lose I couldnt care less, we (Martin, Paddy and myself) are a extremely proud of the way you performed.

Lets keep up the intensity and look for the next one to compete in.

We took a nice little medal collection home along with a huge team joint effort to take 3rd in the teams comp with help from numerous Checkmat teams (sorry if Ive missed any out) Worcester, Bristol, Torquay, The Gauntlett (Neto Nunes), Plymouth, Essex and Hammersmith.
